An NRMA CareFlight trauma team flew treatment to two children who luckily escaped permanent injury in separate mishaps in Sydney’s west today.
Motocross jump fall injures Minchinbury teen at Appin
A teenager was left unconscious for five minutes when he crashed while attempting a jump on his dirt bike at the motocross track at Appin, in Sydney’s south-west, this morning.
The NRMA CareFlight doctor and ambulance paramedics were called to the track shortly after 11 am.
The doctor said while the 13-year-old boy, from Minchinbury, was left unconscious when he landed head-first after misjudging the jump his helmet and protective gear prevented a far more serious injury.
After stabilisation the boy was flown in a stable condition to the Westmead Children’s Hospital for observation.
Toddler’s lucky escape from balcony fall at Merrylands
A discarded mattress saved a toddler who fell from a balcony above a shop in Merrylands, in Sydney’s west, late today.
Police, ambulance and NRMA CareFlight rushed to the flat near the intersection of Merrylands Road and Pitt Street shortly before 5 pm.
The NRMA CareFlight doctor said the 18-month-girl clambered over a railing and fell two metres onto the roof of a shed below.
The girl landed on a discarded mattress then rolled and fell a further two metres to the ground.
The doctor teamed with ambulance officers to treat the girl for facial swelling and a cut lip.
As a precaution the girl, accompanied by her mother, was taken under treatment by the doctor in a road ambulance to Westmead Children’s Hospital for observation where she was in a stable condition on arrival.
