A head-first crash to the ground left a teenager initially unconscious while mountain bike riding at a mate’s place at Yarramundi, on the edge of the Blue Mountains, west of Sydney today.
Ambulance officers and an NRMA CareFlight flying trauma team rushed to the Springwood Road property just before 1.30 pm to treat the youth.
The NRMA CareFlight doctor said while the 15-year-old boy, from Kurrajong Heights, suffered head injuries his riding helmet saved the teenager from more serious injury.
The doctor placed the youth on a ventilator to control his breathing on the helicopter’s mobile intensive care module.
The boy was flown to the Westmead Children’s Hospital where he was in a serious but stable condition on arrival at 2 pm.
